Orthanc

Orthanc is the phonetic spelling of orþanc, an Anglo Saxon or old English word that means intelligence, an understanding mind, cleverness or skillful.  A perfect description for the versatile Smooth Collie.  Orthanc is also the name of the Tower of Isengard within JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.  Its a four sided black tower made of stone or rock which no weapon can destroy.  In the Tolkien language of Sindarin, Orthanc means “Mount Fang” and so is a very apt name for our new home at the foothills of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria.

My dogs are first and foremost beloved companions and willing partners in dog sports, with my secondary goal being to actively demonstrate the Smooth Collie's versatility and promote the breed as a true working dog.

I’m a registered Collie (Rough & Smooth) breeder, although yet to breed my first litter.  I actually prefer working with dogs and desexed bitches as there is less interruption to dog sport training and competitions.

I am a member of the Collie Club of Victoria, the Victorian Herding Association (Secretary), the Tracking Club of Victoria, Scottish Breeds Club of Victoria and a licenced Herding Judge at test level.

I hold a certificate in Canine Myofunctional Therapy and offer my services to a small number of external dogs.

As much as Smooth Collies are my primary focus there is planning afoot to add another breed to the pack in the not too distant future.  More information will be revealed as plans firm up.
